Infinitos Mundos

With the spread of Islam in the region, various Islamic rulers arose, challenging Majapahit's power. This resulted in Majapahit losing significant ground to many of these Islamic rulers. During the late 15th century a civil war lead to the destruction of the royal city of Trowulan by Ranawijaya. Ranawijaya was successful in the end, as his attack resulted in the death of Kertabhumi, leaving Ranawijaya as the undisputed ruler of Majapahit. However with the royal city destroyed, Ranawijaya was left with a choice: rebuild, move the capital to Daha (Kediri), where he had ruled from prior to the civil war, or choose another capital. After much debate, he decided to move to the costal city of Surabaya to rebuild in order to be better situated to profit from the maritime trade. However this move split the kingdom, with the Sultanate of Demak arising as a direct challenger to Majapahit's rule in the region. As a direct result, Majapahit's reach began to recede, shrinking to solely the eastern half of the island of Java, and Bali.

Various conflicts arose between the two kingdoms over the years, but neither was fully able to gain ground against the other, in part due to the strategic location of Surabaya, and the supplies that it could bring in due to its coastal location.

The third power in the region was the ancient Sunda Kingdom, a historic ally of Majapahit, and one of the few remaining Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Java by the early 16th century, the other being Majapahit. Due to a changing religious landscape, and being cut off from their historic allies in the east, Sunda's power began to decline, culminating in several invasions by the Sultanate of Demak, leading to the a significant receding of the kingdom. Similar to the decline of Majapahit to the edge of Java, the Sundanese were relegated to the western coast, where they ruled as the principality of Sumedang Larang.

Shortly after the fall of Sunda, the Sultanate of Demak experienced a period of economic instability, caused in part by the arrival of European traders in the region. Seizing this opportunity, Majapahit allied with Sumedang Larang and invaded the Sultanate, moving quickly to take their capital within a month of declaring war. Faced with no real options, the Sultan surrendered, allowing his nation to be absorbed back into Majapahit. One of the conditions of his surrender, however, was the adoption of a policy of religious tolerance in Majapahit, eliminating much of the former religious unrest from the previous century. The Maharaja of Majapahit followed this move by annexing Sumedang Larang through diplomatic means (marrying his daughter to their ruler), thus solidifying Majapahit rule over the island of Java.

Afterhaving several decades to rebuilt and consolidate their rule over the island, the Dutch arrived and attempted to set up a trading post in Banten (mid 1600s). When the government refused, the Dutch burnt the old city of Jayakarta, and established a new city/trading post there, known as Batavia. Outraged, the Maharaja sent a fleet and army to stop the Dutch. What followed was a war between the Dutch and Majapahit, with the Javanese government soundly defeating the Dutch and forcing them to surrender the city. As part of this treaty, the Dutch were forced to abandon several of their other holdings in the region, including Malacca, Singapore, the Bangka Belitung Islands, and West Nusa Tenggara. A deal was signed with the VOC, allowing them to keep a 1 square kilometre fort in Batavia to use for trade with Majapahit. The Dutch reluctantly agreed to these terms, and switched from a goal of owning land, to an exclusive trade deal with Majapahit. As part of this trade deal, the Dutch recognized the benefits it would bring them if Majapahit were to regain their former lands, and thus offered more advanced technology and support to the Maharaja. Recognizing the opportunity this afforded them, the Maharaja was quick to send envoys to their various former vassals in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, inviting them back into the fold, but as full fledged members of the kingdom this time. Most agreed, and those that didn't quickly found themselves at the receiving end of a gun.

It would take over 50 years, but the Maharajas of Majapahit would slowly manage to reclaim their holdings in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, piece by piece. By the end of the 1600s Majapahit had reclaimed almost the entirety of Sumatra, with the exception of Aceh, and all of Peninsular Malaysia, reincorporating them into the Empire, and were turning their gaze towards Borneo and the eastern islands. At this point, and with the advice from their Dutch trading partners, Majapahit paused their expansion in order to consolidate their rule over the newly added lands. This included investments in infrastructure and roads throughout the newly acquired territories, as well as the expansion of ports, local government, and education. Around this time the Nusantaran language also began to develop, heavily influenced by the Malay languages spoken in Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. The government of Majapahit was quick to capitalize on these new language developments, influencing its development, connecting it to the Javanese script, and adopting it as a lingua franca for the nation by the 1800s. As a result, Nusantaran has been heavily influenced by Javanese. Initially, this new language had no name, and was just seen as a harsh blend between Malay and Javanese. However, the government decided to name it 'Nusantaran', after the name for the archipelago. As the Maharaja at the time had dreams of using it to help unite the people of the new, ever expanding, empire together. A task that the language has significantly helped in fostering. It was around this time (early 1800s) that those living in Majapahit began to become known as Nusantaran, adopting a unified identity to reflect their heritage within the nation.

Around the mid-1700s the Maharaja once again turned their gaze outwards, looking to Borneo and the eastern islands for expansion and reintegration of the realms into the empire. What followed was a rough 20-year cycle of wars and diplomatic meetings with various principalities and Sultanates throughout the region, with Majapahit taking the southern coast of Borneo and the south west tip of Sulawesi, along with two other major cities on the island. However the islands to the east remained elusive, mainly due to Portuguese interference in the region. Similarly, although the Dutch had promised to recognize Majapahit's claims over the region, in reality this did not materialize, and the Dutch had colonized parts of the north-eastern Borneo coastline, along with parts of Sulawesi, several islands and parts of West Papua. Angered by this betrayal, the Nusantaran government began being more selective with the trade they conducted with the Dutch, and began investing in their own scientific research, based upon their trades with the Dutch. They also began investing heavily in local industry and arms manufacturing, getting some resources from China. Throughout the remainder of the 1700s, they kept an eye on the situation, all the while continuing to work on development and education throughout their ever growing empire.

An opportunity arose in the early 1800s as Napoleon rose to power in Europe. Capitalizing on the distraction of the Dutch, the Maharaja of the time declared war on the VOC by surrounding their trading post in Batavia and marching 10,000 troops into their barracks. In the days that followed, Majapahit landed armies on various Dutch and Portuguese islands along the eastern island chain and into the Moluccas. The Nusantaran (as they were now referred to) advance was halted when several British warships arrived off the coast of Surabaya. After some fierce negotiations the British agreed to terms with Majapahit. These terms officially delineated the northern borders on Peninsular Malaysia, ceded Nusa Tenggara (west & east, including East Timor) and the southern Moluccas to Majapahit, and officially outlined the extend of the Nusantaran borders in central and eastern Borneo, and on Sulawesi. Although they were unable to get all they wanted, the Maharaja was pleased with these peace arrangements, as he viewed it as only a matter of time until he could retake the remaining islands that used to be part of Majapahit.

By 1820 the Maharaja invaded the Sultanate of Brunei and Ternate. They were able to quickly conquer the island Sultanate of Ternate, while their conquest of Borneo dragged on a bit longer. Unfortunately, the British and Dutch decided that it was an opportune moment to intervene, forcing Majapahit to take an unequal peace deal with Brunei, and to settle for only taking the island of Ternate, with the rest of the lands being split with the British and the Dutch. Following this, Majapahit resigned themselves to their current holdings, and agreed not to expand any further until a later opportunity presented itself. In 1860 an opportunity presented itself when the Nusantaran government realized that Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands were unclaimed, which prompted a mad rush to claim the two islands and settle them with Javanese settlers. After a treaty was signed with the Dutch and British, recognizing Nusantaran rule over the islands, they were incorporated into the Empire. As the 1800s continued, the government began to move away from their reliance on Dutch trade, opening the door to trade with other nations, both regionally and internationally, with a focus on those that were not going to attempt to colonize them. In the following years the Nusantaran government continued to invest in local development and interconnectivity projects, further facilitating the development and growth of the nation. They also invested heavily in propagating the spread of the new Nusantaran language, using it to help foster a new national identity for the nation.

By the late 1800s, as a result of allowing the trade of more information and technology, Majapahit had become one of the most developed nations in East Asia, coming close to the power of the Japanese. It was around this time when the trade agreements with the Dutch really began to break down, with Majapahit opening trading relations with other powers in the region, including the Japanese and Americans. This allowed for further development and industrialization. It is a result of this trade that saw the Nusantaran government begin to reform, adopting many governmental structures based upon those of the Japanese, which in turn were based upon those of the West. These ideas were introduced slowly, and by the early 1900s Majapahit had peacefully transitioned into a constitutional monarchy.

The 20th Century began with economic growth and the expansion of democratic ideas, as were spread from the Japanese. However this fell apart by the mid 1930s, during the Great Depression, when trade with the Europeans significantly stalled. As a result, Majapahit fully turned from European trade, thus opening the way for trade with other nations. Since this had been something the government was preparing to do for several years prior, they were well prepared for the shift, and were able to weather the economic blow with minimal detriments, although economic growth stalled for several years after this shift.

After a few years of relative peace following the Great Depression, which in turn allowed for the building of industry and development, war broke out between Japan and China yet again. Deciding not to get involved, Majapahit continued trade with the Japanese, maintaining friendly relations and stable trade arrangements. Yet when war broke out in Europe as well, around the same time, Majapahit began eyeing up the situation, especially with regards to the Dutch and Portuguese holdings. Although the Japanese made several offers to Majapahit in an effort to get them to join on the side of the Axis, Majapahit officially stayed neutral. That is, until 1941, when Japan began invading the European colonies in South East Asia. Fearing the worst, Majapahit mobilized their full military capabilities and prepared to go on the defensive against the Japanese. Shortly afterwards, the Japanese began invading Borneo, taking the Nusantaran holdings in the north. Seeing the situation, the Americans reached out and offered to support Majapahit in reclaiming their lands in exchange for them joining the war against Japan. Accepting an offer from the Americans, Majapahit joined the war on the side of the Allies and steadily began to push the Japanese back with the help of the Americans. Together they were able to reclaim much of South East India from the Japanese. Despite multiple attempts by the Prime Minister and Maharaja, Majapahit was not permitted to retain any of the land they had liberated, and were instead instructed to return it to its former (colonial) holders.

Following the war, the Americans offered to give aid to help Majapahit rebuild, in exchange for them adopting some of the government and economic reforms adopted by the Japanese. Agreeing, Majapahit instituted economic and governmental reform, allowing it to become more tailored towards free market capitalism, and to become a more stable government in the region. The Americans also invested heavily in Nusantaran industry, which, combined with the aid and economic reforms, allowed Majapahit to experience significant economic growth and prosperity. Much of this growth was funneled into developing the nation and improving living conditions for its citizens. Between the 1960s and 1980 poverty in Nusantara went from 60% to less than 5%, with the GDP rising at an average rate of over 15% per year. This rate of growth has remained relatively constant, and remains steady to this day. During this period the government also prioritized education and healthcare, along with transportation, building one of the most robust education and health care systems in East Asia.

This economic growth enabled Majapahit to become one of the largest economies in the world today, with Surabaya having a population of over 10 million, and an urban population of over 35 million, making it one of the largest cities in the world. Jakarta has a population of over 5 million people, with an urban population of over 12 million. Several other large cities can be found in Majapahit, including Kuala Lumpur (~1.5 million), Singapore (~5.5 million), Makassar (~1.5 million), Medan (~2.5 million).

This leads into the present day, where Majapahit has one of the largest economies in both Asia and the world. Majapahit has one of the largest populations in the world, and is the largest Muslim-majority nation. Majapahit has a highly efficient public transit system, a strong tech sector, a world class education system, efficient and universal health care, and a high standard of living. With the benefits of investment evident for all, many believe the time is ripe to open discussions with Borneo and Sulawesi once again.
