The current flag of the California Republic was adopted in 1862 with the singing of the Constitution of the Republic (replacing the 1836 California Constitution), The year 1862 coincided with the enterence of Hawaii into the Republic. It replaced the Bear Flag, which was flown in the Republic of California between 1848 (formal recognition of independence from Mexico) and 1962, which depicted a lone red star atop a California Grizzly, walking on grass, on top a red stripe, with the text "California Republic", which itself replaced California's Original flag, the Lone Star flag, flown during the declaration of independence by Governor Alverado in 1836, which depicted the California lone star in red on a white field.

The current flag, known as the Grand banner of the Republic, places the California Grizzly presiding atop the flag, symbolizing the Republic of California as a whole, that bear is crowner by three golden stars, one for Hawaii, one for Alta California, and Baja California, which where the three parties to independently ratify the Constitution of the Republic, signed into late after the Second war of Independence, which upon it's succession in 1861 saw Mexico cede Baja California and the Colorado River territory to California, and the formal recognition of the independence Republic of Hiwawii from Spain.

The field of the flag is dominated by red white and blue stripes, these colors are red, to represent Alta California, Blue, to represent Hawaii, and White, to represent Baja. The pattern of the stripes is identical to that of the time of the Hawaii Republic from its existence to its enterence into the Republic.

Red, chosen by the republic of California, represents sacrafice, broadly as a concept, but also in specific reference to lives lost during the first and second wars of independence.

Blue, chosen by Hawaii, represents Republican vaules, and the natural beauty of the republic.
