HTGT - Modular Helium Reactor

#1

Post by English Channel Union »

With Atomic Scientists obtaining documents from the GT-MHR Project they will begin work on the new Modular Reactor Design for the Artemis Corporation and will present the idea to the Atomic Institute who will begin reviewing their plans for the reactor. The first design of the Modular Helium Reactor features a Reactor Core that is 10m Tall and 4.6m Wide, its initial test reactor will operate on Natural Uranium with a HALEU Fissile Fuel, future designs are intended to feature a U-Th or Pu-Th cycle in various core designs either for Modular Operations or Breeding Operations. The core will be capable of transporting on the back of a Truck Trailer and generate 600MWt and 285MWe as it will operate on an estimated thermal efficiency of ~48%.

This design will be called the HTGT-MHR/1
The Modular Helium Reactor has the intended purpose of being a Multi-Purpose reactor, operating in remote areas or on remote platforms to provide the necessary electrical production for its intended purpose. The Fuel Rods can each operate for 750 Days before requiring refuelling, the reactor features 216 Fuel Pins.

With interest expressed by the Atomic Insitute the Artemis Corporation will begin work on the test reactor, Alloys will be ordered by the corporation so they can begin assembling the Core, Coolant Channels and Fuel Pins along with the Coolant Piping and Gas Turbine Systems to keep the reactor operating efficiently

Aqusition of Reactor Alloys = 25%

The U238 and HALEU U235 will be formed into a UO2 (Uranium Oxycarbide) form surrounded by a Porous Carbon Buffer, Silicon Carbide and a Pyrolytic Carbon Shell

Work will continue on the HTGT-MHR, Atomic Scientists working with the Artemis Corporation would have begun assembling the Reactor Core and its Fuel Pins with the alloys that have arrived. Since engineers and workers have begun constructing the reactor's fuel pins the Artemis Corporation has petitioned the Atomic Government for the HALEU Fuels in UO2 forum, and 216 Pins worth of fuel will be ordered.

Acquisition of Reactor Alloys = 75%
Assembly of Reactor Core = 10%
Assembly of Fuel Pins = 5%

Scientists have begun running semi-accurate simulations, these will only be capable of reasonably predicting the Reactors outcome while they await its completion so they can run live tests and collect more data to better program the simulations. The purpose of the simulations will be to assist in improving the reactor by simulation part changes and how they would affect its operation.

Additionally, Engineers at the Artemis Corporation will begin constructing the Gas Turbine Module, this device will be connected directly to the Reactor Core and will be operated with High-Temperature Helium Gas that has circulated through the core, this module will feature lighter shielding compared to the core module since the Helium Gas cannot become irradiated and hence does not carry the radiation of the core outside.

Assembly of the Gas Turbine Module = 5%

The Artemis Corporation will complete the acquisition of necessary alloys for the HTGT, work will now be focused on the assembly of the Reactor Core and Fuel Pins which is expected to be completed very soon. Since they believe the reactor will be operating shortly, Artemis will contact the Atomic Institute and request clearance to begin reactor operation within the next few weeks.

Acquisition of Reactor Alloys = 100%
Assembly of Reactor Core = 90%
Assembly of Fuel Pins = 80%

Scientists will complete their simulations on the HTGT-MHR, the outcome of the simulations will indicate the MHR will operate within expected efficiency parameters, producing an estimated 285MWe.

The Artemis Corporation will complete work on the Gas Turbine Module, therefore, Artemis will begin installing the Gas Turbine onto its transportation bed so that it can be moved by truck into its optimal location.

Assembly of the Gas Turbine Module = 100%
Installation onto Flatbed = 25%

The Reactor Core for the HTGT-MHR has been completed, and the fuel pins will follow shortly. While the Artemis Corporation awaits the assembly of the fuel pins they will begin installing the Reactor Core onto its transportation flatbed.

Assembly of Reactor Core = 100%
Assembly of Fuel Pins = 90%
Installation onto Flatbed = 25%

The Corporation continues to work on installing the Gas Turbine onto the flatbed for testing.

Installation onto Flatbed = 50%

The Fuel pins for the Reactor Core have been completed, Engineers and Labourers have begun installing the fuel pins into the Reactor with the Control Rods fully descended.

Assembly of Reactor Core = 100%
Assembly of Fuel Pins = 100%
Installation onto Flatbed = 75%
Installation of Fuel Pins = 50%

Nearing completion of the Gas Turbines Installation, Engineers will begin final testing of some of the components within the turbine enclosure to ensure it will operate as intended.

Installation onto Flatbed = 75%
