Axum is an ancient Christian state in north east Africa and south west Arabia, spanning the Red Sea. The nation is predominantly Christian, with a sizeable Sunni minority. The nation has existed in one form or another for over 2,000 years. Although the official language of Axum is Ge'ez, most people speak a local language, with Ge'ez serving as a lingua franca between the various different local languages. Historically a monarchy, Axum became a republic when a coup overthrew the last monarch around 1923. Axum today is marked by high levels of corruption, and a fairly strong pro-Christian movement. Despite this, there are attempts by the government at modernization.
