Overview: The Sovereign State of Rhineland is a state that emerged during the first World War. On Christmas Day, 1914, soldiers up and down the western front chose stopped fighting and left their trenches in an event known as the Christmas Truce. When the day ended, most refused to continue fighting. Furious, the military leadership of both sides sent additional forces to arrest the troops involved in what had become a mutiny. However, many of those soldiers defected, and the men on the front lines turned their guns on those sent against them, with former enemies now cooperating with each other. Refusing to continue what was seen as a senseless and bloody fight on the orders of men who had no care for them, the soldiers carved out their own territory, and held it until their opponents stopped attacking them. Today, the Sovereign State of Rhineland encompasses the Benelux, as well as territory on either side of the former French and German borders. It functions as a sort of military republic, with the Armed Forces in ultimate control of the state, but practicing a degree of democracy.
